Question. How did you overcome your imposter syndrome?
Let me answer your question under the following definition.
Imposter syndrome.
1. the state of mind of the people who think they themselves are imposters who actually are not imposters
2. the state of mind of the people who think they themselves are imposters who actually are imposters
Let me organize my advice in a numbered list.
1. I never overcame. I just have been living together with it for a long. I don't know how to overcome it.
2. visit psychiatrists. not councellers. medicine helps. cognitive behavioral therapy does not help as much.
3. if you think you don't belong, just leave where you are right now. I thought I didn't belong to academia. so I left for the industry. I found the industry much more comfy. I was just too stupid for academia.
4. spend your time with people who have lower expectations. you may feel you are more competent this way.
5. search on the internet for the stories of people who you think you are superior to. in my case, I searched for the experience of people taking cs101 to learn the very basics of programming who are struggling even with the most basic concepts like variables and for loops. (well, maybe I was also struggling just the same way years ago, but no longer) i also searched for the stories of unqualified PhDs/masters who have others to write their own dissertations.
6. deceive your advisor that you are a competent talented student.
